The Dry by Jane Harper
Read January 2018.
This is such a fantastic and book, especially for a debut novel.
Police Investigator and Melbourne resident, Aaron Falk, finds himself called back to his rural Outback hometown to attend the funerals of his childhood friend, Luke, and his family.
Kiewarra is experiencing a crushing drought, which does not seem to want to end, and this is killing the town. It seems that Luke has killed himself and gunned down his own family, out of desperation, but Luke's parents are convinced this cannot be true and want Aaron to investigate what really happened.
Aaron and his father were run out of Kiewarra 20 years ago, in connection with the unsolved death of Aaron and Luke's friend, Ellie, so things in the town are pretty uncomfortable for Aaron.
Tempers flare with the boiling temperatures.
Did Luke really kill himself and his family, and who killed Ellie? Both these mysteries need to be solved.
This story is so beautifully crafted. It is both atmospheric and tense, with lots of red herrings along the way. Jane Harper really transports you to the seering Outback.
This was one of my favourite books from 2018.
