Circe by Madeline Miller

Read April 2018.

I cannot believe that I have not read anything about Circe before, especially as she has a part to play in so many other Greek myths and legends.

Madeline Miller expertly tells this tale of Circe, daughter of Helios, who is exiled to the island of Aiaia, after committing the crime of casting the dark spell that turns a love rival into a fearful sea monster.

Circe learns that she is in fact very talented in the dark arts and settles into her life of isolation, honing her craft as the Witch Goddess.
While living on her island, Circe's fate is intertwined with many of the characters from Greek myth, and one of the most important of these is Odysseus on his epic voyage home.

This is an interesting and compelling tale, which gives power to Circe, rather than portraying her as a helpless woman at the mercy of men. This is a refreshing take on the normal depiction of women in Greek myth.

Madeline Miller's previous book, Song Of Achilles is also pretty good, but this one was even better.
